Dillinger, born as Lloyd Lester Bullocks in 1953, was part of the second generation of DJs, together with artists like Big Youth, Prince Jazzbo and some others. Their path was already smoothed by legends like U Roy or Dennis Alcapone. It was Alcapone that discovered Dillinger's talent and introduced him to Lee Perry, for whom he then toasted on some of Perry's most popular rhythms. The results were very respectable, so that Dillinger soon had the chance to work with other producers like Joe Gibbs, Tony Robinson, Lloyd Campbell, Augustus Pablo, Bunny Lee and Coxson Dodd.
On his debut-album, Dillinger is at the beginning of his 20s, where it seems a bit like he was still looking for his own style. The influence of U Roy and Alcapone is easily noticeable, but Dillinger sounds much more melodious than his models, partly he almost sings. Though he is not that energetic and dragging along as U Roy is, he developed the Chanting-Style to a further and more complex level.
"Ready Natty Dreadie", produced at Studio One, "CB200" and "Bionic Dread", both produced at Channel One Studio, definitely all belong to Dillinger's best output ever. His place among the Reggae-Olympians is for sure!
