Hugh Mundell, born in Kingston in 1962, had one of the most remarkable debuts in the history of reggae with this album, at the young age of 16. He started his career in cooperation with Joe Gibbs, with whom he recorded the still unreleased single "Where Is Natty Dread". Soon after that, he was hired as a DJ by Augustus Pablo for the legendary "Rockers Sound System". That marked a milestone in Mundell's career, and he released his debut single "Africa Must Be Free". He took over the production of his own recordings by 1979, and also produced the album "Speak The Truth" for the later Black Uhuru singer Junior Reid.
All of the songs on this record where written and co-produced by himself, guided by the hands of Augustus Pablo. The most impressive factor are his passionate and conscious lyrics. His genuine voice is mellow and powerful at the same time, carrying his commitment and sincerity to the movement. "Why Do Black Man Fuss And Fight" and "Jah Will Provide" are ultimate examples of Mundell's talent.
Additionally, "Africa Must Be Free" had an all-star line-up as background performers. Legends like Jacob Miller, Leroy Sibbles, Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Leroy Wallace, Carlton Davis or Geoffrey Chung require no further comment, they simply grant a beautiful musical accompaniment.
Tragically the cycle was complete in 1983, exactly the year he claimed Africa to be free five years ago. In an almost creepy irony, he was shot and killed at the age of 21 while sitting in a car with Junior Reid. Reggae lost one of its most promising young performers. RAS Records re-released this masterpiece in 1989, and added a second CD with the equally strong dub versions by Augustus Pablo. This album is pure roots, recommended to everyone interested in reggae music.
