This is a legendary reggae album. If you had to pick the five most influential Rasta anthems of all times, the title track would definitely be one of them. It has been played by many artists, and still is one of the most successful riddims of all times. Another major classis on this album is "Declaration of Rights".

The Abyssinians, consisting of Bernard Collins, Donald Manning and Lynford Manning, have composed "Satta Massagana" in 1968, but failed to market the single successfully. They lined up with Coxsone Dodd in 1969, who either wasn't convinced of the success of the young vocal trio. They finally bought back its tape and released "Satta Massagana" as a single on their own Clinch label in 1971. It now quickly became an instant classic, and Dodd realized what he'd let slip away. A label battle between Clinch and Dodd's Studio One was now sparked, which resulted in a rush of several DJ versions (e.g. by Big Youth, Dillinger) and many instrumental versions (e.g. by Jackie Mittoo, Tommy McCook).

After releasing several hit singles from 1971 to 1976, the trio finally released their debut-album "Satta Massagana" (aka "Forward On To Zion") in 1976. Including hits, re-recordings of older classics, and new material, the record remains a roots masterpiece and brought the group international acclaim.

The bad thing about this album is the lack of variety. Every single song is taken at exactly the same tempo. The Abyssinians are a great vocal trio, but Reggae is a music that draws its power from differentiation - it is important to sow a little variety wherever you can. Even though "Satta Massagana" contains two of reggae's biggest anthems, it kind of lulls you in after a few listens. Anyhow, this album is a must in the context of this website.
